Sankeien Garden is an important historical heritage site that boasts a unique charm and value, even among the many popular tourist attractions in Yokohama.

It was 118 years ago, in 1906 that Hara Sankei, a businessman who made his fortune in the silk trade, opened this garden to the public, believing that “beautiful natural scenery is a common property that should be enjoyed by all.”
In the vast site of 175,000 m², historical buildings* such as a three-story pagoda and a tea house, which were relocated from Kyoto and Kamakura, are skillfully arranged. The charm of the old buildings is further accentuated by seasonal flowers and plants such as plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, lotus, and autumn leaves.
*As of 2024, there are 10 buildings designated as National Important Cultural Properties, 3 buildings designated as Tangible Cultural Properties by the City of Yokohama, and 17 other buildings in total.

In 2007, the entire garden, which combines these old buildings with the surrounding natural environment, was also recognized as a cultural asset and designated as a national place of scenic beauty.

Tour Outline

On the occasion of the annual Sankeien “Autumn Leaves Lighting-up” event, a special dinner will be served by “Masago Saryo” at Hakuun-Residence, a tangible cultural property designated by City of Yokohama, which is usually not open to the public.
“Masago Saryo” is a Japanese restaurant beloved among local people, being awarded two Michelin stars for five consecutive years.

For the first time bamboo lanterns will be installed which do not appear at the annual “Autumn Leaves Lighting-up” event. Only those who participate in this plan can enjoy a special exclusive time and space.

Hakuun-Residence

Built in 1920 (Taisho 9) by Hara Sankei to live with his wife. The roof is covered with cypress bark and the eaves with copper shingles, and the interior is furnished with kyoma tatami mats, a common size in the Kansai region. While the sukiya style is based on carefully selected materials and traditional construction methods, there are also attempts to introduce modern elements into the Japanese style architecture, such as a lounge with chairs and tables, a trussed attic, a telephone room, and a shower in the bathroom.

“Masago Saryo” is a restaurant where you can go on special occasions. The food is so delicious that it has received two Michelin stars for several times. Every dish, made with fresh local ingredients, allows you to enjoy the flavors of each season.
In this plan, you can experience a special dinner in the style of Kaiseki-cuisine, which respects the spirit of the tea ceremony, “wabi-sabi” at Hakuun-Residence.
